Meeting Framework

The American Physiological Society’s (APS) annual meeting, the American Physiology Summit, convenes thousands of life science researchers, educators and students from around the world to celebrate and share discoveries impacting the research community and the world around us.

Key components of this innovative meeting include:

  • Two general sessions to inspire the entire physiology community.
  • Eight game-changer sessions on vital issues selected by the Physiology Summit Leadership Committee and presented by top scientists.
  • 80 foundational science sessions on novel topics that are intersectional and multidisciplinary. This cutting-edge content is driven by APS sections and interest groups.
  • Poster receptions featuring discoveries on the cutting edge of bioscience.
  • A welcoming, dynamic show floor called the PhysioHub that’s designed for collaboration, learning and fun. The PhysioHub features professional development stages, industry partner booths and more.
  • Opportunities to connect with others in the global physiology community, ranging from a welcome festival to networking mixers.
Curating the Best Content

In 2021, APS established two programming governance groups to determine the scientific content of the Summit. With representation from APS membership, sections, interest groups and publications—and a firm commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion guiding principles—these organizers are poised to select top scientific content.

How Did We Get Here?

Years in the Making

In 2019, APS Board of Directors (formerly the APS Council) unanimously voted to create a new stand-alone annual meeting. This meant parting ways with the Experimental Biology meeting, which was held for the final time in 2022. The Society took on the enormous task of developing something entirely new, intentionally planning a program to better serve our members.

Envisioning the Meeting

In 2020, the Society assembled the Team 2023 Task Force to assist in the framing and development of our new annual meeting. These APS member-leaders represent the full scope of the organization, from early-career trainees and young professionals, to section, interest group, committee and Council representatives.

Inaugural Summit

APS held its inaugural stand-alone annual meeting—the American Physiology Summit—in April 2023. Led by diverse teams of APS members, we spent hundreds of hours creating an innovative, unmissable annual event for those working, learning and teaching in the physiological sciences.
