Award Description

The American Physiological Society (APS) Environmental & Exercise Physiology (EEP) Section Research Recognition Awards (RRAs) recognize outstanding research by graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who submit a first-author abstract to the American Physiology Summit. Applications are reviewed by APS section award committees.

From the RRA applicant pool, the EEP Section also offers:

  • One Steven M. Horvath RRA to the top-ranked applicant from an underrepresented racial or ethnic background.
  • Four Charles (Tip) Tipton RRAs (two to predoctoral students and two to postdoctoral fellows).
  • Two Women in Physiology RRAs (one to a predoctoral student and one to a postdoctoral fellow).
Eligibility 

The applicant must:

  • Be a current APS member.
  • Be a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow/medical resident.
  • Submit a first-author abstract to the American Physiology Summit.

To be eligible for the Horvath RRA, the applicant must self-identify from an underrepresented racial or ethnic background. Underrepresented groups in basic and biomedical research are defined according to National Science Foundation / National Institutes of Health criteria as:

  • Black or African American
  • Hispanic or Latino
  • American Indian or Alaska Native
  • Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islanders

Please note that the applicant may only apply to the section to which their abstract was submitted. There are no citizenship requirements for this award.

Criteria 

The application package includes:

  • PDF of the abstract.
  • The abstract number and first author’s full name, sponsor or advisor’s full name and sponsor or advisor’s email address.
  • A letter from the applicant and co-signed by the primary research mentor stating their eligibility for the award(s) applied for, contribution to the research, significance of the research contained in the abstract to the field and statement of applicant’s research goals.
  • Biosketch (National Institutes of Health or National Science Foundation format).

  • 11-point font
  • Single spaced

Award recipients may receive an award once as a graduate student and once as a postdoctoral fellow, regardless of section affiliation. Applicants may apply to as many awards as they are eligible for, however, recipients may only accept one abstract-based award for the American Physiology Summit.

Review Criteria

Applications will be reviewed for the following:

Abstract

  • Clearly stated hypothesis or aim.
  • Technical approach.
  • Results reporting.
  • Appropriate conclusion and significance.

Other

  • Letter from the applicant (see elements to include above).
  • Biosketch.

Materials in excess or insufficient (e.g., inclusion of the letter with extra pages or letter with no signature) will be excluded from evaluation.
