Award Description

The Gastrointestinal & Liver (GIL) Physiology Section Research Recognition Awards recognize outstanding research by graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who present a first-author abstract at the American Physiology Summit. 

The GIL Section also offers a Steven M. Horvath RRA to the top ranked applicant from an underrepresented racial or ethnic background. Underrepresented groups in basic and biomedical research are defined according to National Science Foundation / National Institutes of Health criteria as:

  • Black or African American
  • Hispanic or Latino
  • American Indian or Alaska Native
  • Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islanders

Eligibility

The applicant must:

  • Be a current APS member.
  • Be a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow/medical resident. 
  • Submit a first-author abstract to the American Physiology Summit.

Applicants may only apply to the section to which their abstract was submitted.

Criteria

The application package includes:

  • PDF of abstract.
  • Topic category to which the abstract.
  • A one-page statement to indicate applicant's contribution to the research, the broader importance of the research and the applicant's research goals. This statement should be written by the trainee and signed by the mentor. 
  • Biosketch (National Institutes of Health or National Science Foundation format).

  • Single spaced
Review Criteria 

Applications are reviewed by APS section award committees and judged on the following:

Abstract

  • Clearly stated hypothesis or aim.
  • Technical approach/methods to the study. 
  • Pertinent results obtained with quantitative and statistical comparisons, when appropriate.
  • Clearly stated conclusion. 
  • Significance of the results to the field.

Other

  • Letter from the applicant (see elements to include above).
  • Biosketch

Materials in excess or insufficient (e.g., inclusion of the letter with extra pages or letter with no signature) will be excluded from evaluation.

Award at a Glance

Award amount: $500, plus reimbursement of early registration fees to the American Physiology Summit, and complimentary admission to the Section Banquet dinner.
