Award Description
The American Physiological Society (APS) Teaching of Physiology Section William Galey Scholarship Award provides professional development funds for up to three graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, early-or mid-career faculty newly transitioning into a teaching career to either:
- Attend the Center for Physiology Education’s “From Concept to Classroom (C2C)” pre-conference workshop prior to the American Physiology Summit, or
- Apply to participate in the Effective Physiology Teaching virtual training course.
Please note that there are separate options in the APS Awards portal for each option.
The award is given in memory of William Galey, PhD, in honor of his commitment to the teaching and professional development of trainees in physiology. Read more about William Galey.
Eligibility
The applicant must:
- Be an APS member with primary Teaching of Physiology Section affiliation.
- Be a graduate student, postdoctoral fellow, early- or mid-career faculty transitioning into a teaching career.
Criteria
The application package includes:
- One-page letter of intent that includes the applicant’s career goals and how this award will benefit their professional development and training.
- Curriculum vitae.
- One letter of support from the applicant’s mentor, principal investigator, advisor, or department chair familiar with their career goals, which includes a statement on how the chosen professional development program will benefit their training and career plans.
Applications with excess or incomplete materials, such as a third letter or a blank curriculum vitae, will not be considered.
The awardee for the Center for Physiology Education’s pre-conference From Concept to Classroom must register for and attend the workshop and Summit to receive the award. Awardees for the workshop will be invited to the Teaching of Physiology Section banquet during the Summit and will be asked to help in the review and selection process of the following year. Registration for this event will be reimbursed with the award funds.
The awardee to participate in the Effective Physiology Teaching virtual training course is strongly encouraged, but not required, to attend the Summit. The registration fee for this course will be reimbursed with the award funds.
There are separate applications for each award. Applications are only accepted via online submission.
Award at a Glance
Award amount: Pre-Conference Workshop: $1,000, plus a complimentary ticket to the Teaching of Physiology Section banquet. Virtual Course: Effective Physiology Teaching Course registration reimbursement ($900 value).
