Award Description

The American Physiological Society (APS) Neural Control and Autonomic Regulation (NCAR) Section New Investigator Award recognizes an outstanding investigator in the early stages of their independent career. The award is sponsored by APS strategic partner ADInstruments. 

The awardee will present a talk at the NCAR Awards Foundational Science Session at the American Physiology Summit and be recognized at the NCAR Section reception and business meeting. The award recipient will also be expected to submit a manuscript based on their Summit presentation, to the American Journal of Physiology-Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology by July 1. The awardee will also co-chair the NCAR Awardees Foundational Science session at the American Physiology Summit the following year.

Eligibility

The applicant must:

  • Be an APS member in good standing with a primary affiliation in the NCAR Section. 
  • Be an investigator who has made meritorious contributions to the area represented by the NCAR Section. 
  • Be an assistant professor or a comparable position in a research track at an academic institution or in industry (e.g., scientist, research investigator). 
  • Have held the position of assistant professor or equivalent for no more than three years from the date of award application deadline. 
  • Be within eight years of completing their advanced degree (e.g., PhD, MD, DVM or equivalent) at the date of award application deadline.

Candidates will be evaluated on the quality and impact of their publications, the relation of their publications to neural control and autonomic regulation, evidence of independence and promise (e.g., grant funding, peer review activiites) and two letters of nomination.


Criteria

The application package includes: 

  • A first- or senior-authored abstract of unpublished work to any appropriate NCAR topic at the American Physiology Summit.
  • A NCAR-specific biosketch (use only the NCAR biosketch form provided here) written by the applicant, that includes a one-page personal statement summarizing the applicants research contributions, a complete list of publications and abstracts (listed separately) grants, fellowships and awards. 
  • Two nomination letters from regular APS members.  
  • Three reprints from published articles (first- or senior-authored) that represent the applicant's most significant contributions to the field.
  • Unpublished or submitted manuscripts or review articles will not be accepted.
