- About APS
Animal Care & Experimentation Committee
PURPOSE: The Animal Care & Experimentation (ACE) Committee educates policymakers and advocates for the ethical and responsible use of animal experimentation when necessary for research to advance our understanding of health and disease in humans and other animals.
MEETINGS: The committee meets twice annually. Meetings may be conducted either in person or virtually.
The ACE Committee is composed of eight or more members of the Society and at least one postdoctoral trainee member. The chair of the Science Policy Committee serves as a non-voting, ex officio member. The ACE chair is appointed by the Committee on Committees with approval by the APS Board of Directors. The science policy manager serves as staff liaison. The chair of the ACE Committee serves one year as chair-elect, followed by a three-year term as chair and one year as past-chair. The chair also serves on the APS Advisory Council. The chair represents the Society at AAALAC International as a member organization delegate, serves as an ex officio, non-voting member of the APS Science Policy Committee, and as an ad hoc member of the FASEB Subcommittee on Animals in Research.
- Bring relevant policy issues concerning the care and use of animals in research and teaching to the attention of the Society’s Board and the membership.
- Develop and execute plans of action to address policy issues as needed.
- Organize the public affairs symposium at the APS annual meeting on alternating years.
- Conduct period reviews of APS position statements on animal care and use and propose new statements as needed.
- Carry out projects delegated by the Board.
- Coordinate activities with the APS and FASEB Science Policy Committees.
- Submit a written annual report to the Board at their spring meeting, as part of the consent agenda, providing activities from the previous 12 months. The report will be due three weeks ahead of the meeting.
